Bring a fascinating piece of marine history into your home or classroom with an authentic Atlantic Horseshoe Crab shell molt (Limulus polyphemus ). Also known as the American horseshoe crab, these incredible creatures are native to the American Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico.
Each natural specimen measures between 7 and 8-7/8 inches long, measured from the front edge of the armored head to the very tip of the tail. Because these are real, organic beach-collected items, you will receive a unique horseshoe crab that closely resembles the examples pictured.
Nature's Living Armor
Built like a prehistoric tank, a horseshoe crab relies on its heavily-armored exterior to protect its vulnerable body. Despite their common name, horseshoe crabs are not true crabs at all! They are ancient arthropods belonging to the order Xiphosura, making them more closely related to spiders, scorpions, and ticks.
The Story Behind the Shell
To grow larger, a horseshoe crab must periodically shed its hard exoskeleton. These natural "molts" are left behind near tidal flats during their annual shedding process, which typically occurs every July or August once the animal reaches maturity.
